Mushrooms are an incredible life form. They share more DNA with animals than they do with plants, and serve as a communication network between trees. They’re also one of the most potent natural medicines available, and are capable of profound healing effects in the human body.
These 8 medicinal mushrooms contain major antioxidant concentrations, which help prevent tumours, increase longevity, strengthen neuronal connections in the brain, improve lung and kidney health, and so much more.
The best mushroom extract powders I’ve found are by those from Hybrid Herbs. They are ready to consume, and can easily be added to teas, smoothies, juices or whatever beverage you choose. If you want a high quality mushroom powder, be sure to buy from these guys (click the image below!)!
You can also grow your own mushrooms, made easy by companies that create their own mushroom growing kits or by purchasing mushroom spores. Whatever you decide to do, do not miss the opportunity to eat some of these amazing medicinal mushrooms!
8 Medicinal Mushroms Capable of Profound Healing
Cordyceps Mushroom
Cordyceps has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for decades. It helps regulate immune function, and helps to regenerate red blood cells. It also improves functioning of the lungs and kidneys, which is why it has been used by athletes to improve athletic performance. Studies have shown that cordyceps possesses strong anti-oxidation activity, which overall increases longevity and helps prevent diseases like cancer.
Duanwood Red Reishi
Reishi has been referred to as “The Mushroom of Immortality” in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In Shen Nong’s Classic Book on Medicine, Reishi was considered to be “The Most Superior of All Herbs” — it is one of the most revered herbal substances in China, and has been for over 2,000 years. Reishi can be used for any debilitating illness, as well as dizziness, rhinitis, stomach ulcers, coronary heart disease, and bronchial asthma.
Lions Mane Mushroom
Lions mane mushroom has been used in Japan and China as a remedy to help promote healthy brain function, heal and regenerate nerve tissue, boost cognitive function and muscular co-ordination. It is particularly rich in special nerve growth factors, fatty acids, amino acids, polypeptides, minerals and polysaccharides. Lions mane actually promotes nerve outgrowth, and stimulates the nerve growth factor (NGF). This means it may have potential against cognitive decline such as that seen in Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Shiitake Mushroom
You might see fresh shiitake mushrooms in store. These mushrooms are an amazing fungus – they are rich in vitamin C, D as well as B vitamins. They are used to help strengthen the immune system, promote healthy aging and increase energy levels. Shiitake’s have been found to have a cholesterol-lowering effect, and contain an anti-tumour polysaccharide, lentinan, which enhances the immune system and helps ward off illness like cancer and other diseases.
Tremella Mushroom
This jelly-like medicinal mushroom grows in the tropics on dead branches of broadleaf trees. Tremella promotes healthy complexion by stimulating the production of hyaluronic acid, a compound that binds water to help lubricate joints and muscles, and to make the skin softer and more supple. This mushroom is also high in vitamin D, and similar to cordyceps, improves kidney and lung function.
Turkey Tail
Turkey tail has been widely studied for its immune-boosting benefits, anti-viral effects and cholesterol-regulating abilities. Supplementation with turkey tail has shown improved quality of life after surgery, and extended 5- and 10- year survival rates in patients with stomach and colorectal cancers. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses turkey tail mushrooms to reduce phlegm in the body, to calm the mind, support digestion and reduce infections.
Wild Chaga
One of my favourites – chaga mushroom! These bad boys grow on birch trees, and I’ve even harvested one myself (after much work – they take a long time to hack off a tree). Chaga mushroom has been claimed as a potential cancer treatment in Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s novel “The Cancer Ward”. It is anti-bacterial, anti-allergic, and anti-inflammatory. It’s antioxidant effects can be explained by protection of cell components against free radicals. Chaga mushrooms essentially absorb all of the nutrients and energy contained in the birch tree, which is then supplied to those who consume it.
Maitake Mushroom
Another outstanding mushroom – maitake mushroom. It is prescribed in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japan to support liver health, boost cellular health, balance blood sugar levels, and increase vitality. It helps strengthen the immune system, and wards off a variety of different diseases and illnesses. Maitake mushroom polysaccharides have been found to have a cytotoxic effect on cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells alone, making it a good alternative treatment for those not wishing to undergo standard chemotherapeutic treatments.
How or where can I order some of these mushrooms
