There is nothing I love more than a rainbow smoothie in the morning. This way, I know my body is receiving everything it needs in the AM.

Why is it so important to “eat a rainbow” when it comes to your diet? The different colour groups actually represent different benefits that the fruit and/or vegetable can provide. Each colour class offers its own unique set of phytochemicals, which not only provides them with their array of different colours, but their incredibly powerful nutrients.

Phytonutrients are important because they help prevent most chronic diseases, have anti-aging properties, boost the immune system and essentially heal you from the inside out. Eating a variety of berries and greens throughout the day can supply the body with over 20,000 different phytochemicals – that’s a lot! Taking that into comparison with this smoothie, which can provide your body with over 40,000 different phytochemicals.

This smoothie contains some of my favourite fruit and green combinations, such as:

Blueberries: one of the best sources of quality antioxidants in the world. They are rich in flavonoids, particularly anthocyanins, which neutralize free radicals and protect us from developing diseases like cancer.

Mango: high in vitamin A, which improves vision. It also helps alkalize the body and improves digestion. One of the best benefit, however, is that it has the ability to protect from cancer.

Pineapple: contains bromelain, which is highly anti-inflammatory and strengthens the immune system. It is also an anti-coagulant, meaning that it can allow blood to flow more freely throughout the circulatory system.

Spinach: highly alkaline, and rich in antioxidants like neoxanthin and violaxanthin, which prevent the growth of human cancer cells. Spinach also strengthens the cardiovascular system and is high in iron for healthy blood.

Ginger: incredibly powerful anti-inflammatory. Studies have shown that ginger is even more powerful than drugs like Advil, Aleve, and Tylenol, as it blocks the formation of inflammatory compounds, and breaks down existing inflammation and acidity in the fluid within the joints.

Plus, this smoothie contains stamina-boosting maca powder, and hemp protein, which is one of the most easily digestible protein forms that isn’t acid-forming.

If you know someone who needs some serious nutrient-infusion in their life, send them this recipe!

Antioxidant Rainbow Detox Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients:

– 1 cup strawberries
– 1 cup chopped mango
– 1/2 cup fresh pineapple
– 1 cup packed spinach
– 1/2 cup blueberries
– 1 cup water
– 2 inches fresh ginger root
– 1 tsp. maca powder
– 3 tbsp. your favourite plant-based protein powder (I love Manitoba Harvest)

Method:

Blend all of the above ingredients in a high-speed blender like the Optimum G.2 for about 30 seconds. Enjoy!
