The benefits of tomatoes are not confined to their nutritional or culinary value. They are also vital as a potent home remedy. Many home remedies using tomato exist, but these 5 simple home preparations are some of the best!

As a healthy food, tomatoes pack a punch of many different nutrients. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant good for the heart and blood vessels, vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system, and vitamins A, B, E and K. They are also rich in essential minerals like iron, calcium, copper, phosphorus and potassium, as well as dietary fibre which lowers cholesterol and aids in digestion.

With their abundant availability all year round, tomatoes can be made into simple home preparations to alleviate the following problems:

1. Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting that comes every morning can be the worst start of the day for most pregnant women. This need not be so. Simply juicing a bunch of ripe tomatoes and drinking it right upon waking up will help alleviate morning sickness. This should also make nausea medications unnecessary, reducing the health risk to your unborn baby caused by drugs.

2. Sunburn and Skin Conditions

Skin problems like sunburn can be both painful and unsightly. An effective home remedy can be made from tomatoes by putting them in coconut milk for a while then placing them on the affected area. The tomatoes help close the pores and alleviate the pain, giving you a soothing effect. Drinking a glass of tomato juice daily is great for skin problems such as acne and eczema. Vitamins in tomatoes will clear up your skin over a few weeks and reduce scarring.

3. Red or Bloodshot Eyes

A late night out and too much drink causes that giveaway look in your eyes. This can be corrected by eating 2 to 3 tomatoes before breakfast. Tomatoes are also good at removing dark circles under the eyes. Simply prepare a small paste of tomatoes, turmeric powder and lemon juice. Add some flour to make a paste and then apply under the eyes for 10 minutes. The dark circles should disappear with repeated applications.

4. Diarrhea

An effective home ready for an upset tummy can be made by juicing tomatoes and mixing it with a glass of water and drinking it. The tomatoes will also ease digestion while replacing lost nutrients and vitamins.

5. Skin Care

Tomatoes can help your skin look clear and more radiant when used as a skin rub. Slices of tomatoes rubbed onto the skin will help exfoliate dead skin and clear blackheads. Tomatoes will also cleanse your skin naturally, unclogging pores and preventing acne.

Home remedies can come in handy when an urgent solution is needed for medical emergencies in the home. These should however, never replace your European Health Card, since medical attention should be sought immediately for all serious health problems. Home remedies can however be a useful companion in easing discomfort, pain and irritations.
