benefits of sleeping naked

“Sleeping naked is dangerous because if someone breaks in while I’m asleep and I have to fight them off while naked, well that would be pretty embarrassing.” – post unknown.

I agree. When I slept naked for the first time, such thoughts also appeared in my head. However, rational thinking took over. After all, how often does somebody break into your house? It’s possible, but doesn’t mean it’ll ever happen for sure. So, if such thoughts keep you from trying to sleep naked at night, don’t listen to them. Instead, get yourself a hot tea and a blanket, sit down comfortably on your sofa, and focus, for I’m about to tell you why you need to ditch your pajamas (no matter how cute and fluffy it is) and start sleeping nude.

Ready?

Here are five reasons why sleeping naked is good both for your mental as well as physical health:

1. Sleeping naked helps to prevent vaginal infections.

Did you know that wearing underwear, especially one that is either non-cotton and tight, can trigger a yeast infection? How is that possible? Well, underwear traps warmth and moisture close to your intimate parts, which triggers the overgrowth of fungus. Remember, the warmer and the wetter it is, the more suitable the environment for fungus to start multiplying uncontrollably.

Of course, there are many other reasons why yeast infection can appear, but one that often skips your mind is the type of clothing you choose to wear. Dyed, bleached, non-cotton, dirty and tight clothes will cause irritation, increase heat and trap moisture in the genital area. So, to prevent vaginal infections, sleep naked. It will allow your skin to breathe and help your body keep the right temperature.

2. Sleeping naked releases oxytocin and decreases cortisol.

It’s a well known fact that bodily closeness promotes attachment and increases the feelings of happiness as well as safety. That’s why mothers have been encouraged to cuddle their babies right after birth. Skin-to-skin contact helps them bond with their newborns and stimulates child’s brain development.

However, skin-to-skin contact is not only healthy for mothers and their toddlers, but also for adults. Research proves that regardless of whom you’re hugging or cuddling (it can be a child or your partner), skin-to-skin contact increases the level of oxytocin, i.e. the love hormone, in your body. Thus, you start feeling happy, safe and closer to the other person.

So, if you search for a great way to bond with your partner or want to improve your sex life, start sleeping naked. This way, you’ll rediscover love, experience positive feelings on a much deeper level and find sex to be more natural and enjoyable.

Also, while the level of oxytocin rises in your body due to skin-to-skin contact, at the same time, the level of cortisol, i.e. the stress hormone, drops. So, if you suffer from insomnia or fight depression, sleeping nude can help you heal. When cortisol decreases, you’ll notice that you’re less anxious, more peaceful and so, you’ll find it easier to fall asleep.

3. Sleeping naked improves the quality of sleep regardless of the season.

Sleeping naked is beneficial both in warm as well as cold seasons. Consider: in summer, sleeping nude will help your body keep the right temperature and so, prevent you from overheating. Also, you won’t sweat, which will make you feel more comfortable in bed.

In winter, on the other hand, sleeping naked will help you warm up faster under your duvet and prevent you from waking up in the middle of the night because of twisted or tangled clothes. Thus, your sleep won’t be disturbed.

4. Sleeping naked will build your self-confidence.

We all want to look beautiful and attractive. Thus, many women strive to lose weight, improve the shape of their bodies and even, get plastic surgeries.

Now, while it’s good to lose a few pounds if you’re overweight, it can be downright harmful to drop in weight if your BMI is normal. Also, the pursuit of the so-called perfect figure can only make you feel unhappy and unsatisfied with your life.

If you don’t like your nose, wide hips, or small breasts, remember, there can be someone who’ll find them attractive one day. So, instead of crying over your imperfect figure, start loving yourself. Life is too short to pursue a perfect body, which, in fact, won’t change anything. After all, with smaller waist or not, you’ll be the same wonderful person.

Now, if you’re one of those women who has issues with her body image, make it a habit to sleep naked. It will help you get used to your body’s natural shape and build your self-confidence over time. Thus, give it a try.

5. Sleeping naked makes you a more active person.

There is one dream that most of us share daily: to finish all the duties, come back home, change into your pajamas, turn on Netflix and forget about the whole world. As far as weekends are concerned, there’s nothing better than to stay all day in your pajamas and do nothing. Would you agree?

While such a lifestyle can make you feel happier, it doesn’t improve your health. Staying in your pajamas at home and refusing to go anywhere or do anything can only negatively impact your health. Inactivity and lack of exercise means weight gain, social isolation and then, depression. Thus, ditch your pajamas and start sleeping naked. It will force you to continue putting on clothes until you go to bed and make you ready to go out any time.

What are the drawbacks?

Although sleeping naked has a number of benefits, it also has a few drawbacks you need to be aware of before you decide to sleep nude from now on:

  • Sleepwalking: if you’re a sleepwalker, it can be humiliating to wander around the house without clothes on, especially if you don’t live alone. Thus, in such cases, sleeping naked isn’t recommended.
  • Anxiety: if nakedness makes you feel uncomfortable, first, learn to accept yourself and improve your confidence. Then, when you feel comfortable, give sleeping naked a try.
  • Unexpected periods: if you tend to have irregular periods, you can ruin your sheets when sleeping naked. So, keep a calendar and be mindful of your menstrual cycle.

Time to sleep!

Sleeping naked has a number of advantages: it helps to prevent infections, makes you closer to your partner, and improves your self-confidence. So, will you give it a try?
