Have you tried everything to lose weight, but still manage to pack on the extra pounds? You might have hypothyroidism.

This watercress juice recipe contains ingredients that help heal the thyroid and prevent weight gain.

The hypothalamus regulates body temperature by secreting hormones through thyroid glands, which in return, control how quickly the body burns calories and uses energy. Hypothyroidism happens when there isn’t enough thyroid hormone being produced.

If you suffer from chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, can’t handle the cold, suffer from low body temperature, have slow heart rate, gain weight easily, have PMS issues (like heavy periods), muscle weakness or muscle cramps, hair loss, loss of outer ends of eyebrows, constipation, droopy eyes or low immunity, you may have hypothyroidism.

The first thing you should do is eat cruciferous vegetables in moderation (like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale). Mustard greens, peaches, pears, spinach, turnips and radishes should also be avoided – but only during the time period that you are helping heal your thyroid. You should absolutely avoid all caffeinated products, sugar substitutes, refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, diet sodas, sodas, diet foods, white flour and dairy products.

Consuming foods higher in iodine like kelp and watercress, and ensuring that you get enough B-complex vitamins and minerals like selenium, copper and zinc is also important. Iodine is the number one healer of under-active thyroids, and getting it from natural sources like watercress and kelp is essential.

Watercress Juice Recipe 

Ingredients: (serves 1)

– 1 bunch watercress
– 1 lemon, peeled
– 3 large carrots
– 1 bunch parsley
– 1 inch fresh ginger root

Method:

Run all of the above ingredients through a juicer and drink immediately.

          Generally, lower iodine causes weight gain due to its effect on the thyroid gland.

    Except strawberries… I read they contain goitrogens and should be avoided. I am newly diagnosed and it seems that I need to give up almost everything I eat regularly. No more gluten, dairy… I used to eat broccoli and cauli every day! It’s hard to reinvent my every day.

      Contrary to popular belief, cruciferous veggies aren’t that bad for the thyroid after all. Stay away from gluten, dairy, refined sugar, and wheat. Don’t be concerned about fruit and vegetables.
