Essential oils have been around for centuries. They carry the physical properties of flowers and plants in a highly concentrated form, and are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Perfume oils are artificially created fragrances from harmful, lymph-clogging chemicals, or contain synthetic substances that do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer.

The aroma and chemical composition of essential oils provide effective psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. You can use essential oils either through inhalation (burning them in a diffuser) or application of the diluted oil to the skin. You can use them to massage with, or add them into bathwater or a compress. You can even ingest some essential oils, however, I would do some research on that oil, or use doTERRA oils which I will be speaking about next.

My friend Christy Fechser from Modern Wellness sent me some essential oils for certain ailments I have been feeling over the last couple months and decided I would give them a try. I received Melaleuca (tea tree) oil for skin issues I was experiencing due to coming off a 7 year bout of birth control, as well as a “Deep Blue Rub” for a shoulder injury and Solace for hormonal healing.

I was also sent a 3-pack gift box of doTERRA essential oils which are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils. This means that they protect the chemical compound of the plant just as it was produced from the earth. doTERRA’s collection of essential oils represents the finest aromatic extracts available in the world today. Each oil provides the living essence of its source botanical, gently distilled from plants that are nurtured and carefully harvested throughout the world. Each oil is 100% natural and passes strict standards of purity and potency. They can be used individually or blended for personalized essential oil therapies.

Here are some awesome facts about doTERRA essential oils:
– No fillers
– No synthetic oils added
– No contaminants or toxins
– The right plant material selected
– Grown in the right environment & harvested at the right moment
– Harvested in the right way (bark vs. flower vs. other plant material)
– Heated at the right temperature, and temperature has increased at the right rate
– Steam has been circulated in the right way, at the right pressure and temperature for the right amount of time
– Cooled at the right rate
– Efficacy tested for its purity and therapeutic grade qualities by scientists
– Carefully controlled extraction process
– Only aromatic, pure extracts are gathered – no ineffective compounds mixed in
– Tested for balanced levels of aromatic compounds
– Gas chromatography and Mass spectrometry tested

The doTERRA introductory kit contains Lavender (calming, sleep aid, burns, bruises, headaches, fevers, insect bites and allergies), Peppermint (headache, fever, stomach aid, joint pain, sinus congestion, energy), and Lemon (Disinfectant, sore throat relief, neutralizes odours, antibacterial, gout) essential oils as well as an A-Z essential oil usage guide which guides you through natural solutions for over 250+ ailments.

What I experienced using these oils

After about two months of using these oils I can proudly say that I am definitely going to be ordering from doTERRA in the near future. The deep rub helped my shoulder feel and move better than it had been from using nothing at all – I also used the deep rub on a few of my friends who were experiencing minor injuries and they all agreed that it improved the condition of their injury. As for solace and the tea tree oil, because my hormones are still figuring themselves out I didn’t experience much change in my complexion or “regulation” of my cycles, however I do know that tea tree oil works wonders for blemishes. When I used to consume a diet that contained processed foods my skin was not the best – I used tea tree oil to help heal  blemishes and they would disappear within days.

Lavender is an incredibly calming remedy and helps for anyone having troubles falling asleep. If you rub a little bit of lavender on your pillow before falling asleep, you will likely experience a more restful sleep (I used to do this when I was in University and stressed out all the time (and not being able to fall asleep), and it worked wonderfully!). I also used this lavender on a burn I inflicted on myself (by accident!) and it helped tremendously.

The peppermint is a wonderful energy lifter, and helps to clear out the sinuses. I normally just take the peppermint and either rub a little under my nose, and breathe deeply. This is wonderful if you have a child with lots of nasal congestion – instead of having them breathe in synthetic vick’s vapour rub, just go the natural route and rub some peppermint on their chest or under their nose! Remember that peppermint can feel icy hot on young and sensitive skin so be sure to dilute peppermint oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil.

I was surprised to see lemon essential oil, I had never smelled anything quite like it! It was very uplifting and happy. With this oil, you can actually consume it by adding a couple drops to your water. I, personally, rubbed it over everything in my room (mostly the wood pieces), and my room smelled amazing after. I love the scent of lemon, so I really resonated with this oil in particular.
