6 Benefits Of Reverse Osmosis And Why To Avoid Unfiltered Tap Water

Unfiltered tap water is the worst kind of water that you can drink, apart from bottled water that comes in a plastic container. Over the last years, research has shown that an endless array of man-made, toxic contaminants can be found in almost every public water system in the U.S.

In fact, there is a database that the public has access to, which you can use to determine what contaminants are present in the tap water that’s served in the area you live. So take a seat, brace yourself and give it a try.

A reverse osmosis water filter system is able to remove most toxic contaminants and it’s the only way to treat water properly and make it safe for drinking, unless you are using a Berkey filter, which also provides water of superb quality.

But there are more benefits associated with reverse osmosis. You can find them in the following list:

1. Contaminant-Free

As already mentioned, reverse osmosis water is free from the majority of toxic contaminants, that are often man-made and can have a negative impact on your health. If you’ve played around with the database for a bit, you now have a rough idea of what kind of substances we are talking about and how they can affect our well-being.

For those who didn’t have the chance yet, here is an extract from the database for the great City of Chicago:

  • Contaminants detected above health guidelines – 9 (Bromodichloromethane, Chloroform, Chromium, Dibromochloromethane, Dichloroacetic acid, Radium-226 & Radium-228, Trihalomethanes, Trichloroacetic acid, Hormones) Except for the hormones, all of the listed contaminants are cancerous.
  • Other detected contaminants – 10 (Barium, Chromium, Dibromoacetic acid, Fluoride, Haloacetic acids, Molybdenum, Nitrate, Nitrite, Strontium, Vanadium)

To clarify: Not all of the detected contaminants are necessarily harmful! Molybdenum is contained in vegetables and also often used by athletes to supplement their diet. Dibromoacetic acids on the other hand increase the risk of cancer and may cause problems during pregnancy.

2. Delicious

Simply put, clean drinking water is delicious! It tastes like water is supposed to taste like. It’s not overly salty without any bitter or metallic aftertaste. This also influences the taste of food, as tap water is often used to wash, boil and mix.

3. Scentless

Some contaminants, especially bacteria, can make water smell unpleasant. A reverse osmosis system removes bacteria with ease, and with it all unpleasant smells.

4. Refreshing & Enjoyable

Delicious, scentless water has a much more refreshing character than contaminated tap water and it’s far more enjoyable.

5. Drink More

If you enjoy your food, you are likely to eat more of it. The same goes for water. If you enjoy the taste of it, you are likely to drink more and we all know about the benefits of staying hydrated.

6. Save & Protect

Make your own drinking water and you help the environment, because you use less plastic (as in plastic water bottles) and at the same time you can save money, because you don’t have to spend it on bottled water anymore.

Conclusion

Reverse osmosis water has so many benefits over unfiltered tap water, that you don’t have to think twice about which of the 2 you choose. Apart from protecting our health, reverse osmosis water is delicious and refreshing, it makes it easier to stay hydrated and you also help the environment by foregoing bottled water.

I have read a recent report by the WHO stating that RO water is not as healthy as we initially believed. Do you have any take on this? Thank you!

Yes. I still think RO water is a much better option than tap water, with all things considered.
