This past year I’ve been teaching myself how to nebulize colloidal silver. When I was younger, I had plenty of near-death experiences that stemmed from grueling asthma attacks I experienced every winter season.
While I thankfully out-grew my asthma conditions, I still get wheezy lungs when the winter temperatures drop below -40 Fahrenheit (yes, I’m still questioning why I live in what I like to call “Winterpeg”).
I’ve always felt that, aside from my clean diet, my lungs needed a little more help – and that’s where the silver comes in.
What Is Colloidal Silver?
You may be surprised to learn that prior to World War II, the most powerful antibiotic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal substance was silver. It was used by doctors all around the world because it was known to kill over 650 different illness-causing microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
It wasn’t until the 1940s when modern antibiotics arrived, that colloidal silver was put on the back-burner and sort of forgotten as a traditional natural remedy.
There are four types of products marketed as “colloidal silver,” which can be categorized as (1):
- Ionic silver solutions
- Silver protein
- True colloidal silver
- Silver hydrosol
Ionic silver solutions contain silver particles as ions. It is the least expensive to produce and is the most popular product in this category. However, ionic silver solutions are not true colloidal silver.
Silver protein-based products add gelatin. It is the second-most popular type of colloidal silver product on the market and can be made by adding silver protein powder to water (not that hard, huh?). While this is often marketed as colloidal silver, it is not true colloidal silver. It is not as effective, and you will not reap the same benefits as true colloidal silver.
True colloidal silver doesn’t contain any protein or other additives. The silver “water” consists of nanometre-sized silver particles.
Silver hydrosol is a pure mixture of positively charged silver ions and silver nanoclusters. For example, the silver particles in Sovereign Silver are solubilized to smaller than 1 nanometer (one billionth of a meter, or 100,000X smaller than the diameter of a human hair). Therefore the silver is evenly distributed throughout the suspension.
Why Nebulize Colloidal Silver?
Nebulizing colloidal silver is the fastest way to get silver nanoparticles into the bloodstream. The nanoparticles bypass the digestive system and go straight to the lungs where they are absorbed into the bloodstream.
It is by far, one of the most effective ways of healing the lungs naturally.
When I received my Mabis Ultrasonic Nebulizer, I was excited to start testing out how it worked.
Within the first couple days of nebulizing three times a day for about 5 minutes each, I coughed up some phlegm and mucus, but by the third day, I started feeling much better.
I also used the nebulizer when I happened to get a respiratory infection after getting sick, and my symptoms were nearly gone overnight.
Side note: I’ve recently been made aware that the Mabis Ultrasonic Nebulizer has been discontinued. A great alternative would be the Omron Mesh Nebulizer, the Philips Respironics Mesh Nebulizer, or the Philips Respironics Innospire Elegance. A great thing about these models is that they can be used even while you’re laying down.
Aside from my own experiences, nebulizing colloidal silver may also help with the following conditions:
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Bronchitis
- Pneumonia
- Sinusitis
1. Cystic Fibrosis
Unfortunately, there isn’t much research available on the use of colloidal silver for individuals with cystic fibrosis, but what little research is available is quite interesting.
One study reported the case of a 12-year-old boy with severe cystic fibrosis lung complications who weaned himself off oral steroids, nebulized antibiotics and regular asthma medications.
What did he replace it with? Colloidal silver (2✓)✓ Trusted ResourcePubMed CentralHighly respected database from the National Institutes of HealthRead source.
His parents gave him 2.5mL twice a day, and over the next three months, he achieved sustained improvement in his symptoms. He remained well after that point, and enjoyed skiing, school rugby matches and other activities he couldn’t previously perform.
Recent research has also found that in some cases, a pathogen known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa can trigger serious lung infections and inflammatory allergic reactions.
This is important, as “Pseudomonas aeruginosa is recognized as one of the most important pulmonary pathogens and the predominant cause of morbidity and mortality in CF” (3✓)✓ Trusted ResourcePubMed CentralHighly respected database from the National Institutes of HealthRead source.
This pathogen also happens to be extremely susceptible to colloidal silver. Studies by C.L. Fox and S.M. Modak demonstrated that as much as 12% of silver is taken up by the organism’s DNA (4✓)✓ Trusted ResourceScienceDirectLeading platform of peer-reviewed literatureRead source. According to their study, inhibition of bacterial growth results from “interference of DNA function by binding of silver ions along the helical chain.”
Perhaps then, colloidal silver could be an add-on treatment for those suffering from cystic fibrosis. While more studies are definitely needed to come to any solid conclusions, the research at present is promising.
2. Bronchitis
Bronchitis is usually caused by a pathogen that causes inflammation of either (or both) the bronchial tubes or bronchi that connects your lungs to your windpipe (trachea).
The pathogens irritate the tiny hairs (called cilia) that line the passageways, causing vicious coughing sprees, lots of mucus, and a “rattle” in the chest when breathing.
Bronchitis can be viral or bacterial, with viral being more common.
Fortunately, animal studies have shown that colloidal silver may be an effective means of killing viral and bacterial pathogens (5✓)✓ Trusted ResourcePubMed CentralHighly respected database from the National Institutes of HealthRead source.
And while consuming colloidal silver in itself is useful for preventing and reducing symptoms of viral and bacterial infections (6✓)✓ Trusted ResourcePubMed CentralHighly respected database from the National Institutes of HealthRead source, an even better way to increase lung contact is through nebulization.
Nebulizing colloidal silver allows the silver particles to directly contact the pathogens that harbor themselves in lung tissue, which effectively kills them.
3. Pneumonia
When pneumonia is viral, antibiotics won’t help in the least. The good thing about colloidal silver, however, is that it can help regardless of the pathogen type. While ingesting colloidal silver definitely helps battle bacterial and viral infections, nebulizing it is even more effective.
When you nebulize colloidal silver, the silver nanoparticles directly contact the germs residing in the lungs. So, instead of just consuming silver, and the particles taking longer to reach lung tissues (if at all), they’re treating the source instead of bypassing it.
Using silver to heal lung issues is similar to utilizing respiratory support, and it works quite fast, clearing up conditions within a few days.
Dr. Victor A. Marcia-Vega, M.D., discovered that while dealing with pneumonia patients, nebulizing colloidal silver resulted in effective remission of pneumonia symptoms (7).
Clinical studies on animals also show that inhalation of silver nanoparticles provides significant protection against pneumonia infections (8).
4. Sinusitis
A 2014 study published in the International Forum for Allergy and Rhinology found that colloidal silver can benefit people as a nasal spray (9✓)✓ Trusted ResourcePubMed CentralHighly respected database from the National Institutes of HealthRead source. Nebulizing colloidal silver would have a similar effect, given that pathogens that affect the respiratory system are associated with common allergies and asthma.
Colloidal silver has the ability to destroy airborne pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This might be why those who suffer from severe allergies receive such dramatic relief from the silver particles.
Will Nebulizing Colloidal Silver Help with Lung Cancer?
In the video below, Dr. Robert Scott Bell shares what he would personally do if he were ever diagnosed with lung cancer.
Dr. Bell states in the video that “the silver alone is profound because the cancer cells don’t have any antioxidant defense mechanism. And the silver brings with it as much as 10 times its atomic weight in with every particle of silver at a micro-level. We’re talking a nanoscale level. And you can overwhelm and devastate cancer cells in that area within the alveoli. You can inhale that [nebulized silver] deeply into your lungs.”
With this being said, no clinical studies to date have found silver effective against lung cancer.
While silver does help boost the immune system to lower one’s risk of developing the disease, further studies are still required to make any solid conclusions.
How To Nebulize Colloidal Silver
Most portable nebulizers (like the ones mentioned above) hold about 1 teaspoon of colloidal silver (about 10ppm) in the “medicine cup.” With the nebulizer on the high setting, this will produce about 5 minutes of vapor.
If you start to nebulize colloidal silver at the first sign of respiratory issues, all you’ll need is one 5 minute session. In more severe cases, nebulizing 2-3 times spread throughout the day is recommended.
Will Colloidal Silver Turn Me Blue?
There is limited research proving that any side effects of colloidal silver use exist (9).
Most people are familiar with the concept of colloidal silver turning their skin blue (a condition called argyria). There are more warnings of colloidal silver turning skin blue than articles pointing out the health benefits, but wrongly so. Argyria is a condition caused by the misuse of cheap silver products marketed as colloidal silver (such as ionic silver or silver protein).
If you use true colloidal silver as directed, you’re not going to experience these effects.
What Brands Are Safe?
While many people have ventured into making their own colloidal silver products, one company I trust the most is Sovereign Silver. I’ve been using their products well over 10 years and have had nothing but positive outcomes as a result.
Sovereign Silver contains bio-active silver hydrosols with over 98% consisting of bio-active silver ions and silver nanoclusters. It is 99.999% pure silver, verified by third party assays, and doesn’t include trace impurities, toxins, or unwanted heavy metals that many other brands might have.
Cymbiotika, a company that is leading the way in creating revolutionary supplements that are actually absorbed and assimilated in the body also recently came out with their own silver product.
Cymbiotika’s Coated Silver was invented and perfected at Clarkson University laboratory by a world-class Ph.D. chemist with decades of experience in metal nanotechnology. There have been multiple university studies and government studies performed on the safety and the efficiency of coated silver.
The silver nanoparticle technology used in their Coated Silver makes it one of the safest brands of silver to ingest and use within the body.
Silver nanoparticles do not clump or become trapped inside the body. They are non-reactive and chemically inert – causing no damage to surrounding tissues.
Because Cymbiotika’s Coated Silver comes in concentrated form, it needs to be diluted before use. Their product comes with a manual on how to dilute it for applications such as nebulizing.
Colloidal Silver Precautions
Always source your colloidal silver from companies who do their research! Cymbiotika and Sovereign Silver are two great companies that create silver products that won’t harm the body when used properly.
Do not use products made from ionic silver or silver protein.
Do not nebulize colloidal silver if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Colloidal silver interacts with some drugs as well. If you’re using the following drugs, do not use colloidal silver, or talk to your healthcare provider:
- Antibiotics (Quinolones, Tetracyclines)
– Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
– Enoxacin (Penetrex)
– Norfloxacin (Chibroxin, Noroxin)
– Sparfloxacin (Zagam)
– Trovafloxacin (Trovan)
– Grepafloxacin (Raxar)
– Demeclocycline (Declomycin)
– Minocycline (Minocin)
– Tetracycline (Achromycin) - Levothyroxine
- Hepatotoxic drugs
– Acetaminophen (Tylenol and others)
– Amiodarone (Cordarone)
– Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
– Isoniazid (INH)
– Methotrexate (Rheumatrex)
– Methyldopa (Aldomet)
– Fluconazole (Diflucan)
– Itraconazole (Sporanox)
– Erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others)
– Phenytoin (Dilantin)
– Lovastatin (Mevacor)
– Pravastatin (Pravachol)
– Simvastatin (Zocor)
– Others… - Penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen)
Dosing of colloidal silver is also dependent on one’s age, health, and several other conditions. Always follow the manufacturers’ recommendations on how to use their products.

What do you think about using a clean essential oil diffuser (that creates a fine mist from sound waves) in an emergency if the hospitals are overloaded?
do you think there is roughly an equivalency to a nebulizer?
There are nebulizing diffusers out there like this one: https://amzn.to/3brDPfb
It would definitely be a good idea to nebulize essential oils right now, just make sure you read up on essential oils that are harmful to pets and children, as there are many that cannot be used around them.
thank you but what about using a clean diffuser to inhale collodal silver? I have no money right now to buy a nebulizer but i have silver and eo diffusers are super inexpensive. ust wondering if it is a similar quality of mist?
Nebulizing helps break apart the molecules so they better absorb. You could definitely try diffusing, but I have no experience with it.
I use 1 oz 25ppm per gallon in humidifier you can see the ions in steam with a Lazer pointer
That might just be the vapor droplets you’re seeing. Nanoparticle sized silver is not visible to the human eye.
I am interested in nebulizing colloidal silver and DMSO. I’m having a very hard time finding a nebulizer that uses non PVC plastic (safe, inert). I was looking at essential oil nebulizers that are made of glass. They advertise as being nebulizers, not diffusers. Have you had any experience with those? Or can you recommend a nebulizer that uses safe plastic (non PVC, non elastic)?
I haven’t come across any nebulizers that don’t use plastic. Some essential oil nebulizers use glass, yes, that might be an interesting way of distributing colloidal silver particles!
Could I put the silver solution in my CPAP for overnight misting and distribution
Hi Mary – I don’t know much about how silver would interact with a CPAP machine. I only know that it works well in a nebulizer.
Hi Carly! Nice article and very timely. I bought the Cymbiotika Coated Silver to use in my nebulizer. However the Cymbiotika directions card does NOT mention how much to use in what liquid to thin the concentrated Silver. The closest they get is to suggest 1 drop in 8oz. of water (to drink when getting sick) or 3-5 drops in 8oz. of water (to drink for compromised immune systems and time of illness). If the nebulizer medication cup holds 1 teaspoon, this becomes a guessing game. Is there any way you can find out?
Hey Sally – I would just make up the amount of 1 drop in 8 ounces of water, and then use a teaspoon from this mixture (store the rest in your fridge or in a cool dark place and use as needed).
I would like to point towards a shop I personally use to get colloidal silver & colloidal gold, lots of research on their site, and even lab results for their colloidal silver. Their store is: https://stores.purecolloidal.com/ and their blog/research site is: https://truecolloidal.com/ .
They sell high ppm (1000ppm+) and has the research to show you that higher ppm colloidal silver has smaller silver molecules (0.1 nm). When you dilute it the silver clusters bond together and become bigger. I have had some of the best results with their colloidal silver.
I really liked your article, thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Unless it is nanoparticle-sized silver (not ionic, and not silver protein), I would not recommend it. Right now, I recommend Sovereign Silver & Cymbiotika. Both Nanoparticle colloidal silver.
It is smaller than nano (0.1 nanometers), the higher ppm, the smaller the particle size. Here is some info: https://truecolloidal.com/high-ppm-silver . Here is the lab results to prove the atomic weight: https://truecolloidal.com/lab-certificates .
I have been making and purchasing colloidal silver for 10+ years, and I have had the best results with this company. I was able to kill strep throat in less than 24 hours using a spray bottle with 4000ppm. Most people believe that 10-30 ppm is all you need is because it is hard to go above that without the silver oxidizing, and the water changing color. Don’t get me wrong, the standard 20 ppm can do miracles, the problem is 1. The silver clusters are usually between 1-8 nano meters, which is too big to penetrate some viruses / bacteria. 2. You are not getting enough silver, and the viruses / bacteria develop a resistance to the silver (that is the reason that if you use colloidal silver for an extended period of time, it loses its effect). Another issue with the standard nano size silver, it it is too big to be filtered through the kidney, which could cause issue years down the road.
Sovereign silver is great stuff, that I have used in the past with great results, all I am saying is that there are more advanced methods for creating colloidal silver today.
I did enjoy you article, which I found because I ordered a nebulizer compressor last week, and I hope to see more people bloging about colloidal silver, especially in these troubling times!
